  • New Paper of Interest: Consensus statement for inert gas washout measurement using multiple and single breath tests. Robinson P, Eur Respir J. 2013 Feb 8. [Epub ahead of print]
Abstract: Inert gas washout tests, performed using the single or multiple breath washout technique (SBW and MBW, respectively), were first described over 60 years ago. As measures of ventilation distribution inhomogeneity, they offer complementary information to standard lung function tests such as spirometry as well as improved feasibility across wider age ranges and improved sensitivity in the detection of early lung damage. These benefits have led to a resurgence of interest in these techniques from manufacturers, clinicians and researchers, yet detailed guidelines for washout equipment specifications, test performance and analysis are lacking. This manuscript provides recommendations about these aspects, applicable to both the paediatric and adult testing environment, whilst outlining the important principles that are essential for the reader to understand. These recommendations are evidence-based where possible but in many places represent expert opinion from a working group with a large collective experience in the techniques discussed. Finally, the important issues that remain unanswered are highlighted. By addressing these important issues and directing future research, the hope is to facilitate the incorporation of these promising tests into routine clinical practice.

  • 2013 Regional Chair nominations and elections
If your Region is due to have an election for regional chair in 2013 you should think about participating in the leadership of the Society by nominating for Regional chair or vice-chair.  The Regional (and Vice) Chair positions are key to keeping our Society alive at regional level and to ensuring that each region has a voice. Remember that although a single person is the Regional Chair at any given time the workload for a region can be shared by a number of people working together with the Chair being the voice for the Region (in the same way that the ANZSRS Board has a Chair). If you have any questions please do not hesitate in contacting any Board Member by email.
  • 2013 Board nominations and elections
The ANZSRS Board will see two members retire from the Board in 2013 so it is time to start considering who you would like to see sitting on the ANZSRS Board driving the future of the Society. If you have any questions relating to being a Board member please contact any member of the Board (Brigitte Borg, Maureen Swanney, Bill Noffsinger, Peter Rogers, Kevin Ellyett). The work load is not a great deal, but does require a commitment to attend Teleconferences on a regular basis (4 or 5 a year) and attend the Board meeting and AGM at the Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • 2013 Membership Fees
The Board has deemed that there will be a small increase in membership fees to keep up with CPI increases. This is the first increase in 3-years.
The 2013 approved membership fees are:
